Don Boudreaux has the right idea about schools over at Cafe Hayek, unfortunately we’ll never get the government out of schools. Why? Because as long as there are elected officials, “support” for education will be the same thing as “dollars of government money thrown” at education. Given that goverschooling is here to stay, I still think there’s plenty of room for choice.
When I took health class in high school my district offered the choice between an abstinence and a contraceptive part of the sex-ed curriculum. I think something like that could be done with Evolution vs. ID, or creationism, or whatever you want to call the religionist non-science that’s becoming popular on some parts of the right. Just let the parents choose: either science or ID, it doesn’t matter to me which one the parents pick. I think that gets around having to dismantle the public schools, and gets around the establishment clause also.
I guess the science kids might make fun of the ID kids, but that’s all right. Kids make fun of other kids anyway, and if the power of social shunning can get fewer people interested in that ID bunk, then so be it.
